Among the most popular tree species in the forest is certainly the red fir with which fine musical instruments are made.

The native fauna is very rich and includes both mammals such as chamois, deer, ibex, roe deer (but in recent years also bears and lynxes) and birds such as the capercaillie (symbol of the forest), the eagle, the eagle owl, the kestrel and the imperial raven.

The first historical news about the thousand-year-old forest dates back to 1007 when Henry II, the Holy Emperor of Germany, donated the territory of the forest to the Bishop of Bamberg (in Bavaria). While in 1759 the forest was bought by the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. The forest was only “Italian” following the Peace Treaty of Saint-Germain in 1919.

Fusine’s Lakes: a mini guide

Those who have decided to visit Tarvisio and its surroundings certainly cannot miss a visit to the Fusine lakes, which offer one of the most spectacular landscapes in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The Fusine lakes are less than 30 minutes by car from our B&B in Tarvisio, and the more sporty can also think about reaching the lakes by mountain bike.

The Fusine lakes are two alpine lakes (Upper and Lower) located in the heart of the Julian Alps and offer visitors a unique spectacle both in summer and winter for their incredible colors.

Some curiosities:

The Fusine lakes in winter have the lowest temperatures in Italy.
Some scenes from the film “The Girl by the Lake” were filmed on the Fusine lakes.

The perimeter of both lakes is surrounded by a beautiful walk in the shade of the woods that flank the lakes on all sides. The route proposed by the lakeside walks is very simple and also suitable for less trained walkers or for example for families with children.

Both lakes are equipped with practical refreshment points where nothing is missing, the upper lake has a large lawn area where you can perhaps organize a picnic in full respect of nature. In the lower lake instead it is possible to rent a rowing boat with which to navigate the lake.

Not far from the lakes we also find the Peat Bog of Scichizza. An area of 10 hectares that has been a protected area since 1998. It offers the typical peat bog landscape, welcomes many animal species and is also worth a walk.

At the bottom of the valley there are Nordic ski slopes for a total of 60 km that offer different levels of difficulty.

In the Fusine plain there are 14 km available for cross-country skiers and mushers (sled dog races).

Snowboarders have access to the Gold Park snowpark located at the start of the Tarvisio del Duca D’Aosta facilities.

For the little ones, the snow playground is worth mentioning. It is located in the Angelo plain between Tarvisio and Camporosso and offers inflatable games and an area for bobsleighs and sleds.

Moving to Pontebba instead we find the ice stadium where it is possible to skate with rental skates and home to the Serie A hockey team “Aquile”.
